How does it work?
In every directory have to be one main, or triggered html file - usually
these files contains one script for adding/changeing/deleting users record
-associated with IP number of user's host. If user loads some other page
from the the system which contains loader it will change associated page
with the user, or after some inactivity period record will be deleted.
Can it be less users than counter shows?
Yes it can:
- if user loads a page and does not spend inactivity time on the page
by leaving polarhome.com site.
Can it be more users than counter shows?
Yes, it can be as well:
- if the user loads one page but spends more time than the inactivity
period. actually he/she is online but counter will not count it until next
script load.
- if more than one user is coming from one IP address (IP masquerading
etc.) it counts as one, even if the loaded document will change.
- if user uses chat or adult services or other non triggered area of
the system. Counter will not track these activities.
- actually, just about 20 main pages are triggered at www.polarhome.com
How can I now the exact number of users of the system?
There are few methods.
- Number of current http users in statistics
run apache web server
status
- Number of current telnet users also from statistics
or from the telnet session with
command who
- Number of current ftp users if you read welcome message during login
to the ftp://ftp.polarhome.com or ftpwho command from the shell.
- Number of chat users also from the welcome message on irc server
irc.polarhome.com
- BUT the absolute best information is a netstat command
from telnet session. (more info
by man netstat) .
